-David Grand, PhD
Brainspotting can be used to address a variety of issues, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and more. We use eye position to help your brain reprocess difficult memories or experiences, which can then help you release the difficult feelings or bodily sensations associated with them. Brainspotting can also help you strengthen your own natural resources and resilience.
One of the many benefits of brainspotting is that you don’t have to talk about what has happened. Maybe you don’t have the words, or you feel like it’s been talked to death, or maybe even you’ve tried other types of therapy but they haven’t helped. Brainspotting is a way to address the connections in your brain without having to put language on it.
Even if the circumstances that bring you to therapy haven’t changed, we can help change how overwhelming it feels. You can feel peace and calm around difficult life circumstances. And you can do this without having to relive any negative experiences or trying to convince yourself that “it’s not that bad.”
I’ll help you through this process, tailoring each step to your specific needs and preferences. My approach comes from a place of compassion: even in life’s struggles, you can find peace and healing.
As hard as it can be, it’s worth it.

Brainspotting is a technique developed out of Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to address trauma, anxiety, and more. Your eye position is linked to a specific spot in your brain (brainspot) that holds different memories. Through finding and focusing different brainspots, we work with your brain to release difficult emotions.

Brainspotting can address a variety of symptoms and concerns. It is most helpful in working with trauma, as well as the anxiety and depression that goes along with that. However, brainspotting can also address creativity, grief, and performance. Additionally, brainspotting can be used to help build on your natural resilience. Learn more.

Brainspotting is different from traditional therapy in that it doesn’t require much talking. We will begin by having you identify the issue you want to work on. Then you’ll walk through an exercise to get more in touch with where you experience that in your body. Together we will identify the eye placement that correlates with that emotion, and you will focus there while your brain does all the work! Learn more.

While there are similarities (brainspotting was discovered during EMDR sessions!), there are some key differences. Brainspotting is completely client-led, meaning there is no strict protocol to follow. You get to be in the lead. You don’t have to talk as much as is required in EMDR. One of the differences that folks notice the most is that while EMDR relies on eye movements, in brainspotting we find one spot to focus on. Learn more.

Everyone experiences brainspotting differently, and different sessions may feel different. You may notice different sensations in your body, muscle twitches, sensations of temperature changes, or waves of pressure. You may also experience flashes of memories or emotions, or notice sounds or smells. Some people don’t notice much at all during session, but feel the changes afterwards. While it feels different at first, many clients prefer this approach, and you are always in charge of where we go with it. Learn more.
