Finding a Therapy Intensive in North Carolina
It takes a lot of courage to start therapy and even more to decide you want to do a therapy intensive. For many people in North Carolina, it can be hard to find the therapy intensive that fits your needs. I’d like to help you find the therapy intensive that is right for you.
I want to help you find a therapy intensive in North Carolina.
Therapy intensives can be so helpful with healing emotional wounds, yet it can be hard to find one! Here’s some things to help you find a therapist who provides therapy intensives.
Know what you need
Figure out exactly what you’re looking for! There are as many different types of therapy intensives as there are people. If you want to address past traumas, try searching “trauma therapy intensive” rather than just “trauma therapy.” Same for if you are looking for OCD treatment, making sense of a new autism or ADHD diagnosis, or a couple’s intensive. Be specific in your search term.
Know who you are looking for
While all counselors should be affirming, the reality is that not any one therapist is the best fit for everyone. While you can’t get everything from a webpage, it can be helpful to get an idea of who they are. Does their website appear LGBTQIA+-affirming? Are they neurodivergence-affirming? Do they seem like someone you could feel safe with? Do they have pages on their site that speak to what you want out of an intensive?
Types of therapy intensives
What are you wanting to get out of a therapy intensive? Some people are looking to address past traumas. Others are wanting to kickstart ongoing therapy. Don’t be afraid to ask a potential therapist about what their intensives look like. Do they stick to a specific therapy modality (like brainspotting), or is it a mix of different types of therapy?
Where are they located
One of the great things about therapy intensives is that location isn’t necessarily as important as weekly therapy. It can be hard to make it to a therapist’s office for an hour a week if they are in a completely different city. With an intensive, even if you have to travel, you can go to the therapist and stay for a weekend close to where the intensive takes place.
Many therapists hold intensives online, which can be even easier for you. Same as the rules for traditional therapy, you would need to be physically located in a state where the therapist is licensed to practice. This can help with scheduling when you travel often for work (or anything else), or maybe even have a therapist you want to work with who isn’t in your state. I’ve worked with many out-of-state clients for therapy intensives where they have traveled to my state and stayed in an Airbnb or other rental for the weekend while they do their intensive.
Payment and cost
Be sure to ask about cost of a therapy intensive and payment due dates. Some therapists offer a payment plan for therapy intensives, while others require full payment up front. It can also be helpful to ask if you are able to add additional intensive days as needed, and how would that impact cost.
